What's Changing: The Two-Pronged Pivot
1. Backward integration: Securing the scarce raw material
Iodine itself is a naturally scarce, largely imported element for India. It is sourced from only a handful of geographies worldwide chiefly Chile, Japan, and pockets of Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan and the US Gulf Coast/Oklahoma region. This forms a barrier to entry for new players. Infinium has over 2 decades of experience in iodine chemistry. The company leveraged its expertise through its subsidiary Infinium Healthcare Private Limited and has entered a 50:50 US joint venture, IBL Elements Incorporation, targeting iodine extraction from oilfield saltwater brine using proprietary technology capable of 99.9% purity. It targets to deliver 30% of Infinium's ~250–300 MT captive iodine requirement under a 30-year supply agreement.
2. Forward integration: Contrast media raw materials
The second and more revenue-visible leg is the move into contrast media intermediates, the raw materials used in PET scan, MRI, X-ray, etc. This segment is expected to contribute roughly Rs 60 crore of revenue in second half of the year of FY27, at an industry-benchmarked EBITDA margin of 29–30%. The company expects to cater to customers across India, China, South Korea and the US.
Outlook: The company has delivered 4 year revenue CAGR growth of 18% despite relying on imports for a significant portion of its raw-material requirements. Revenue has grown consistently despite capacity utilisation remaining below 100%. The company has maintained healthy ROCE at 13.04%. Management has guided for steady growth of 15% in the legacy API, intermediate and iodine-derivative businesses. In the second year after commercialisation of the Contrast Media project, management expects the segment to contribute approximately Rs 100 crore of revenue. At a blended company level, management is targeting an EBITDA margin of ~22% by FY28, supported by the higher-margin Contrast Media business and continued growth in the legacy portfolio. Steady demand from existing customers is expected to support further uptake of value-added products in iodine chemistry such as ATIPA. At CMP, the company trades at 35x PE on TTM Basis.
